About Vietnam

Vietnam works well as a north to south route. Hanoi is the starting point, with the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and street food on almost every corner. From there it is a short drive to Halong Bay, where a cruise takes you between thousands of limestone islands.

Further south, Hoi An keeps its old shophouses and lantern-lit lanes, and Ho Chi Minh City is the busy modern end of the trip, with the Cu Chi Tunnels a half day away. Pho, banh mi and fresh spring rolls are part of the itinerary whether you plan for them or not. Internal flights are cheap and quick, so a week covers two regions and ten days covers all three.

We plan the trip around your dates and your group size. Tell us when you want to travel and our team sends you a plan and a quotation. Nothing is booked until you approve it.

Best places to see

  • Halong BayLimestone islands in a sheltered bay, seen from an overnight or day cruise with kayaking and a cave visit. Mornings are usually clearest.
  • Hanoi Old QuarterNarrow trading streets around Hoan Kiem Lake, with the Train Street, Dong Xuan market and coffee shops on every corner. Best explored on foot in the evening.
  • Ninh Binh and Trang AnRowing boats through caves between karst hills, sometimes called the inland Halong Bay, plus the Mua caves viewpoint steps. A comfortable day trip from Hanoi.
  • Hoi An Old TownA lantern lit heritage town of shophouses, tailors and the Japanese Covered Bridge, with a riverside night market. Stay for the evening, not just the day.
  • Ba Na Hills and the Golden BridgeA cable car up to a hilltop resort with the hand held Golden Bridge and French village. Go early, as cloud and crowds build after midday.
  • Cu Chi TunnelsThe wartime tunnel network outside Ho Chi Minh City, with sections you can crawl through. A half day trip, often paired with the War Remnants Museum.
  • Mekong DeltaBoat rides through coconut channels, a floating market and local workshops around My Tho or Can Tho. One long day from Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Da Nang and Marble MountainsCity beaches, the Dragon Bridge and cave shrines inside the Marble Mountains, between Hoi An and the airport.

Suggested itinerary

  • Day 1 Arrive at Hanoi, transfer to your hotel, evening walk in the Old Quarter with street food.
  • Day 2 Hanoi city tour with the Ho Chi Minh complex, the Temple of Literature and a water puppet show.
  • Day 3 Drive to Halong Bay for a cruise with kayaking and a cave visit, back to Hanoi or overnight on board.

Best season

Vietnam is long, so seasons differ along the route. October to April suits the north, including Hanoi and Halong Bay, though January and February can be cold and misty. February to May suits the south. The central coast around Hoi An and Da Nang is driest from February to August, and sees storms between September and November.

Good to know

  • Indians need an electronic visa for Vietnam, applied for online before travel. Our team files the application and shares the checklist, and you carry a printout of the approval.
  • The currency is the Vietnamese dong. Notes carry many zeros, so count carefully. Cards work in hotels and city restaurants, but street stalls and boats are cash only.
  • A tourist SIM or eSIM is cheap at the airport and coverage is good even on the cruises.
  • Cover shoulders and knees at pagodas and shrines, and remove shoes where asked.
  • Vegetarian food is easy at Buddhist com chay restaurants. Elsewhere ask for no fish sauce and no meat broth, as stock is often meat based.
  • Crossing the road means walking steadily and letting the scooters flow around you. Do not stop suddenly halfway.
  • Agree taxi fares or use an app, and keep bags in front of you in crowded city streets.
  • Internal flights are short and cheap but baggage rules are tight, so we book the right allowance with your ticket.
